Marlen Aureus, celluloid fountain pen

The Marlen Aureus is a fountain pen inspired by the Roman aureus, the ancient gold coin of the Roman Empire. The name evokes the history of the first international currencies.

The Aureus (denarius aureus) was a coin minted during the Roman Empire. It was used in large-scale commercial trade. It is considered a precursor to modern international currencies.

This fountain pen is made of multicolored celluloid, where purple fades into golden bronze and eggplant color blends with cobalt blue. The trim is available in bronze or silver, for an aged look that suits the pen's historical theme well.

A reproduction of the Roman aureus coin is featured on the top of the cap. The clip is attached with two visible rivets, just as it was in the past.

Filling system and limited edition

The filling system is a side-compression mechanism. It is operated by pressing a small coin into the slot on the barrel. The slot is decorated with a stylized column, one of Marlen's distinctive hallmarks.

The nib is 18Kt gold, available in Extra Fine, Fine, Medium, and Broad sizes. It is part of a limited edition: 810 pieces in bronze and 810 in silver.

Marlen chose celluloid to pay tribute to this history, creating a fountain pen with classic charm to sit alongside other historically-themed models such as the Marlen Dante Alighieri. To learn more about the history of the Roman coin, you can consult this historical entry.
